6 DAYS KILIMANJARO TREKKING WITH MOUNTAIN BIKE
OVERVIEW:
Biking up Kilimanjaro is a new concept and to date only few mountain bikers have ever managed to successfully bike up Kilimanjaro
on mountain bikes.
We have two routes which are suitable for Mountain cycling to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Marangu Route and Rongai Route.
This due to Many favour to these route because are considered to be the easiest path on the mountain, due to its more gradual slope.
You will have one guide cycling with you at all times, so you can cycle up and down the mountain, or combine cycling with hiking, whichever you prefer.
You will each have a porter for your bikes, who will carry them for you when you prefer to hike and an entire team of porters that will
carry everything from your rucksack and tent to the food & water supplies for the entire trip.
Day 0: Pre-trek Briefing
we will pick you up from Kilimanjaro Airport or Arusha airport and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi. Pre-trek briefing at your Moshi hotel. You should be planning to arrive atleast one day before the start of the trek. Today we will spend in having a pre-trek briefing. We will also review your equipment and rent any equipment which is needed.
DAY 1: Marangu/Kilema gate - Kilema camp | 11 km
This morning a pick-up will be arranged from your hotel in Moshi and transfer to Marangu gate where we will take care of the permit registrations for every cycling person. There we will meet a team of porters that will follow us on the route. Then, from Marangu gate, we will be transferred to the Kilema gate which will be our starting point for the ride in The national park of Mount Kilimanjaro. We will cycle through rainforest with a lot of different plant species, birds and animals. The ride will end in Kilema camp on 2980 meters where we will overnight in tents inside the camp area. Today is 70% cycling.
DAY 2: Kilema camp Horombo camp | 8 km
Today the ride will take us through Kilimanjaro's semitropical foothills and then on a steep path to the Horombo camp at 3700 meters high. From there we will have a beautiful view of the mountain Kilimanjaro with its two peaks, two brothers, Mawenzi and Kibo. We will overnight in the hut. Today is 75% cycling.
Day 3: Horombo Acclimatization 1 8km
This day is going to be used for acclimatization which is a very important part of the trip. After the breakfast, we will ride through the Alpine desert up to the Mawenzi Hut and then back to Horombo camp. Overnight is again in Horombo camp. Today is 90% cycling.
Day 4: Horombo camp Kibo base camp | 11 km
The ride will start after breakfast. On our way, we will pass the Senecio garden with the endemic tree species and continue through the Alpine desert. It is the path that goes in the middle of the two peaks, Kibo and Mawenzi, which makes this route very scenic. In Kibo base camp you will have a summit briefing for all information needed regarding the rest of the trip. Then, we will have time to rest in the afternoon. Today is 90% cycling.
Day 5: Kibo camp - Summit - Horombo camp 1 12km
This part of the route is starting in the middle of the night with a zig-zag trek climbing up along the slopes. It will take approximately 2 hours to reach Hans Meyer's Cave and from here the gradient gets steeper. The climb continues for another 3 hours to Gilman's point, where we will take our bike from porters and start riding on the crater ring to the summit - Uhuru Peak. From here we can see the glaciers of Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru as well as beautiful lands of Tanzania and parts of Kenya. At the summit, you can choose if are you prefer to continue riding your bicycle or walk, according to your health condition and suggestions from the guide. On the way down we will stop at the Kibo base camp for the lunch and continue to the Horombo camp. Today, from Kibo to Uhuru and then Kibo is 20% - 80% cycling, from Kibo to Horombo is 80% cycling.
Day 6: Horombo camp Kilema gate - Moshi I 19-30km
After the night of rest and the breakfast we will make our final ride down across moorland and rainforest to Kilema gate. From there you will be transferred to Marangu gate for check out and then to your hotel. Drive back from Kilema gate to Moshi with the bicycle is optional.
